A Book Seller’s Saturday

Today was one of those days that make everything about opening The Story Cellar worthwhile, and make me believe that I could actually – one day – do this full time.

This morning I had barely got the sign out before the first customer appeared, eager to see if the cosy crime novels I had posted about yesterday were still for sale. We spent the next ten minutes discussing our favourite authors, the kinds of novels we enjoy, and why the Netflix adaption of The Thursday Murder Club should be avoided if you enjoyed the book.

The next customer had seen a book in the window that she wanted. She browsed for a while and ended up choosing an extra one.

The customer after that was looking for the new John Grisham I also posted about yesterday. Because I had trouble with the payment terminal, she went back to browsing and also made off with one of my father’s Gerald Seymours.

The final customer had dropped by last time I was open “just to look but I have don’t have time to browse” and then later shouted to me from his bike that he had spent the day talking me up to his friends. Today he had time to browse, and we discussed nature, politics, the American frontier, banned books, Steinbeck, and Captain Ahab.

It was a very good day.

Books sold today: Murder in the Jardin, Death and Boules, The Private Patient, Three Sister Three Queens, The Widow, The Unknown Solider, Moby Dick, Tortilla Flats (twice).
