Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

The Story Cellar made the papers! Yes, papers as in plural.

Imagine my delight when I opened my postbox on Thursday to find my picture on the front page of the local paper, Øboen. The day before, I had made the online version of the county paper, Fyns Amts Avis. You know you’re living in a small community when your mother’s neighbour tells her, ‘Your daughter’s in the paper’ or when you’re hailed as you pass by on the street with a, ‘There’s our new bookseller!’

For the first time, customers arrived as soon as I opened.

One woman generously donated an entire box of Jeffrey Archer novels and short stories, so if there are any fans out there that need a fix, I’ve got you covered.

But back to the paper … I always thought the phrase “humble and honoured” was some trite comment people made on LinkedIn when they didn’t want to sound like they were grabbing too much credit for something, but I get it now. It was exactly how I felt when I received a message from the journalist. Honoured to be asked, and humble that it happened after only my first day open. And now here I am in print. With lots more books on the shelves and more still to come. This time there is no way around it, I will need another bookshelf before the next opening day.

In the article I shared some of my plans for the bookshop, namely that there will at some point be cake and hot chocolate and maybe some wine. I’d like to start a bookclub, but not in the traditional sense where everyone reads the same book. I’d like to share what books have meant to me, how books have got me through difficult times, how I’d love to hear about which books have helped others. When I don’t have customers, I edit my novel or read something new on the shelves.

I love this job. I wish I could do it every day.
